Card declined in store
The three most common reasons a Glede gift card is declined — and what to do about each one.
Updated 20 August 2026
If the gift card is rejected, it is almost always for one of three reasons. Go through them in order.
1. The amount is higher than the balance
This is by far the most common reason. A card with NOK 340 left rejects a purchase of NOK 400 — the entire payment, not just the difference.
The solution is to ask the cashier for partial payment: "Can you charge NOK 340 to this card, and the rest on this?" Most checkout systems support it.
Check the balance in the Glede app before shopping — see Balance and transactions.
Rejected for "too little money", but you know you have enough?
Then you almost always pay with a different card than you think. If you have several cards in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet — including several Glede gift cards — it is easy to make mistakes.
Check that the last four digits on the card the wallet shows are the same as on the card you have money on in the Glede app. If they don't match, choose the right card before you buy — see the guide for Google Wallet or Apple Pay.
2. The store has an industry code that is not allowed
The card cannot be used for cash withdrawals, money transfers or gambling. This is determined by the industry code the shop is registered with with Mastercard — so a few very ordinary shops are rejected because they are registered as, for example, insurance businesses.
If you think the store should work, contact us and state the name, and we will check the specific code.
Sites with known issues right now
We are not aware of any sites with problems right now. If you are rejected at a place you have shopped before, say from with your name and time — we receive several messages about the same place, we investigate it and write it up here.
3. Error in Apple Pay or Google Wallet
If you pay with the phone and the terminal does not respond at all, it is usually the contact between the phone and the terminal — not the card. Follow the troubleshooting for Google Wallet or Apple Pay. The "Contact card issuer" error message is explained in the Apple guide.
If you pay online and the payment is rejected, check that you have entered the expiry date and CVC correctly — they are in the Glede app under card details, and are not the same as on a bank card you already have.
Still rejected?
Contact us. It helps us a lot if you provide the name of the store, the amount, and approximately when you tried — then we can see the declined transaction directly.
